About Us

Group 16  saw its humble beginnings at the end of 1989 when a group of pupils, newly emerged from their pupillage at the Bar, were advised by the Johannesburg Bar Council that accommodation in established chambers was in short supply. They quickly solved the problem by starting up a group of advocates on the 16th Schreiner Chambers, appropriately calling themselves “Group 16".

As is the nature of practice at the Bar, members come and go. However, a core group of the founding members remain and constitute the foundation of Group 16. Our group prides itself on its democratic style of management, and the fact that within its ranks are a close knit group of advocates, who since its inception, have engendered and maintained an efficient, stable and harmonious group of advocates. Group 16 over the years has attracted advocates from all areas of practice and walks of life and today it remains a diversified, accessible and well balanced group.

In 2001, with the exodus of Bar from the CBD, the group took up chambers in what was then known as the Nedbank Building, situated at No 2, Protea Place located at 12 Fredman Drive. The building has since become known as Sala House and subsequent to Group 16, Sandton establishing its presence, the Johannesburg Bar Council took up occupation of Sala House on the 1st Floor.

Group 16 is committed to transformation within the Johannesburg Bar and over the years it has provided valuable training in which to engender this transformation. It has also established a transformation fund to which all members contribute, which seeks to assist black advocates to gain a foothold in practice at the bar.

Two of its past members, Phillip Coppin and Bashir Vally were appointed to the bench and currently sit as judges of the South Gauteng High Court.

In 2010, Group 16 extended its offices onto the 3rd Floor  and created a Board Room facility which is available to attorneys and clients at a reasonable fee for the conducting of arbitrations.

Group 16 prides itself on the fact that throughout its twenty two year history it has, retained a contingent of loyal staff members who have helped us to run our group efficiently.
